Today the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NIRA) opened up .NG at the second level so it is now possible to register yourbrand.ng instead of yourbrand.com.ng.
NIRA experienced several problems that have left accredited registrars in an awkward position as they try explain to clients why domain names were registered and then deleted by NIRA.
NIRA was supposed to provide a list of restricted and premium domain names that were to be blocked prior to the 16 April launch.
Registrars were only provided the list after the launch resulting in NIRA deleting and refunding domain names that were restricted or reserved as a premium domain name (premium domains will only be sold via auction).
During the launch NIRA, due to an apparent error, charged registrars a fee double the agreed price thus substantially reducing the pre-paid credit of each registrar.
The above situation is unfortunate. Lexsynergy, an a NIRA accredited registrar, has issued a refund to all affected registrants.
