As of 1 December 2017, second level .mt domain names will be available for registration. In announcing the changes, NIC(Malta) said there will be no changes to the existing third level domains that are currently available. The announcement follows similar changes introduced in 2014 by .nz (New Zealand) and .uk (United Kingdom).
The transition will include a Preferential Registration Period from 1 December 2017 to 30 November 2020 where special rights will be given to existing com.mt registrants. During the Preferential Registration Period, existing registrants may additionally register their domain name directly under .mt for free. For example, the registrant of myname.com.mt may also register myname.mt at no additional charge.
