Unauthorised domain access, also known as domain hijacking, can have a significant impact on organizations and individual domain owners. Domain hijacking occurs when an attacker gains administrative control over a domain that enables them to modify several elements of the domain, including registration data, DNS records and the ability to transfer the domain to another registrar. To help protect against this fraudulent activity, some domain registries offer a service called Registry Lock which adds an additional layer of security to domain registrations.

In order to update or transfer a domain that has a Registry Lock, an authorised individual from your company will contact Lexsynergy with a request, which will be verified by Lexsynergy. After manual verification, Lexsynergy will undergo a similar process at the registry. The domain will then be unlocked for a limited period to make the update. The domain is then locked again. This “out-of-band” step protects against domain name hijacking, compromised systems, and system errors.

Some of the registries that offer a registry lock include: Verisign (.com, .net, etc.), Nominet (.uk, co.uk, etc.) Eurid (.eu) and Internet Stiftelsen (.se).
